Scholarship Exam Details

Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) is a government fellowship scheme meant to support students belonging to minority communities like Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and Parsi who want to pursue M.Phil or PhD in India. The fellowship provides a monthly stipend and other allowances for 5 years to help students focus on full-time research. This fellowship used to be applied through UGC, but now selection happens through the UGC-NET exam. There is no separate MANF exam. To get this fellowship, the student must qualify UGC-NET (JRF category) and then choose research in any UGC-recognized university.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Candidate must belong to a minority community.

  • Must have completed post-graduation (Master’s degree).

  • Minimum 55% marks in post-graduation (50% for reserved categories).

  • Must qualify UGC-NET JRF.

  • Family income should be below 6 lakh per year (as per old rules; varies with institution now).

Benefits:

  • Monthly fellowship stipend (same as UGC-JRF):

    • First 2 years: around ₹31,000 per month

    • Next 3 years: around ₹35,000 per month

  • House rent allowance (HRA) as per location

  • Contingency/Research grant yearly

Q1: Does MANF have its own exam?
A1: No. MANF selection is based on UGC-NET JRF qualification.

The UGC-NET exam consists of two papers:

Paper 1 (Common for all subjects):

  • Teaching aptitude

  • Research aptitude

  • Comprehension

  • Logical reasoning

  • Data interpretation

  • Communication

  • People and environment

  • Information & communication technology

  • Higher education system

Paper 2 (Subject-Specific):

  • Based on the subject chosen by the candidate (e.g., History, Sociology, English, Education, Commerce, etc.)

  • Syllabus depends entirely on the chosen subject’s official UGC-NET syllabus.

To know the exact Paper 2 syllabus, the student needs to specify their subject, for example:

  • UGC-NET Sociology syllabus

  • UGC-NET English Literature syllabus

  • UGC-NET History syllabus

  • UGC-NET Commerce syllabus
    etc.
