Scholarship Exam Details

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Ministry of Education to assist students from economically weaker sections. Its primary goal is to arrest the dropout rate of students after Class 8 and encourage them to complete their secondary education. Each year, 100,000 fresh scholarships are awarded to Class 9 students, which continue through Class 12. For 2026, the scholarship provides ₹12,000 per annum (disbursed as ₹1,000 per month). To be eligible, the student's parental income from all sources must not exceed ₹3.5 Lakhs per year. The scheme is exclusively for students studying in Government, Government-aided, and local body schools. Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS), and private residential schools are not eligible. The scholarship is highly competitive at the state level, as each State/UT has a fixed quota of scholars.

Q1: What is the minimum academic requirement to appear for the NMMS exam?
A1: To be eligible for the selection test in Class 8, a student must have secured at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade) in their Class 7 examination. For SC/ST candidates, there is a 5% relaxation, meaning they need a minimum of 50%. This ensures that the scholarship targets students who are both financially needy and academically capable.
Q2: How is the scholarship money disbursed to the students?
A2: The scheme is fully integrated with the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). The funds are credited directly into the student’s bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). It is mandatory for the student to have an active bank account linked to their Aadhaar card to ensure there are no delays in the monthly ₹1,000 credit.
Q3: What are the rules for the renewal of the NMMS scholarship in higher classes?
A3: The scholarship is not a one-time grant. For continuation in Class 10, 11, and 12, the awardee must get a clear promotion from the previous class in the first attempt. Specifically, for renewal in Class 11, the student must secure at least 60% marks in the Class 10 Board exams (55% for SC/ST). Failure to meet these criteria or changing to a private school will lead to the cancellation of the scholarship.
Q4: Can a student hold NMMS along with other scholarships like NTSE?
A4: No, a student is generally entitled to only one scholarship from the Central Government at a time. If a student qualifies for multiple schemes, they must choose one and inform the school authorities. Holding multiple central scholarships simultaneously can lead to a recovery of the amount and disqualification.
