Competitive Exam Details

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Combined Geo-Scientist Examination is the paramount recruitment drive for postgraduates in earth sciences, chemistry, and geophysics. It is designed to recruit top-tier scientific talent into elite Group 'A' gazetted posts within the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). The roles offered include Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, and Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology, Chemical, Geophysics). Officers recruited through this exam lead India's national mapping, mineral exploration, earthquake and tsunami monitoring, and vital groundwater resource management initiatives. This is a highly adventurous, field-heavy scientific career offering a Level-10 starting salary, immense prestige, and the opportunity to contribute directly to the nation's natural resource security.

The examination pattern has been comprehensively modernized by the UPSC to ensure only the absolute best scientific minds are selected. The recruitment process is a rigorous three-stage cycle. Stage-I is the Preliminary Examination, an objective-type Computer Based Test (CBT) consisting of two papers: Paper-I (General Studies) and Paper-II (Domain Specific subject like Geology, Chemistry, or Geophysics). The Prelims acts as a strict screening mechanism featuring a 1/3rd negative marking penalty.

Candidates who clear the Prelims progress to Stage-II, the Main Examination. The Mains is purely a descriptive, conventional-type written examination consisting of three core domain papers (e.g., Geology Paper I, II, and III), each carrying 200 marks. Candidates must write extensive scientific answers, draw complex geological diagrams, and solve advanced geophysical or chemical derivations. Finally, Stage-III is the Personality Test (Interview) carrying 200 marks, where a panel of senior scientists and bureaucrats evaluates the candidate's practical field knowledge, academic depth, and suitability for leading scientific expeditions. The Combined Geo-Scientist exam is the absolute pinnacle for science postgraduates in India.

Q1: What is the educational qualification required for the Geologist and Chemist posts?
A1: For the Geologist post, a candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology, or Earth Science. For the Chemist post, a candidate must have an M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, or Analytical Chemistry from a recognized university.
Q2: Can final-year M.Sc. students apply for the Geo-Scientist examination?
A2: Yes. Candidates appearing in their final year of the requisite Master's degree examination are eligible to apply and sit for the Prelims and Mains. However, they must produce their final passing degree certificate at the time of the Detailed Application Form (DAF) submission or the Interview stage.
Q3: Are the marks obtained in the Prelims (Stage-I) added to the final merit list?
A3: Yes. This is a unique and critical aspect of the Geo-Scientist exam. Unlike the UPSC Civil Services where Prelims is only qualifying, the marks secured in the Stage-I Prelims (400 marks) ARE added to the Stage-II Mains (600 marks) and Interview (200 marks) to determine the final merit list.
Q4: Is there an age limit for applying to these posts?
A4: The age limit for the Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist posts in the GSI is 21 to 32 years. Standard government age relaxations (3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST) are applicable.

Prelims (Stage-I): Paper-I (General Studies - 100 Marks): Current Affairs, Indian History & National Movement, Indian/World Geography, Polity, Economic Development, Environment & Ecology, General Science. Paper-II (Domain Subject - 300 Marks): Objective MCQs specific to Geology, Geophysics, or Chemistry based on Master's degree level syllabus.

Mains (Stage-II - Descriptive):

Geologist: Paper-I (Physical Geology, Structural Geology, Mineralogy), Paper-II (Igneous/Sedimentary/Metamorphic Petrology, Geochemistry), Paper-III (Indian Stratigraphy, Economic Geology, Applied Geology).

Geophysicist: Paper-I (Solid Earth Geophysics, Earthquake Seismology), Paper-II (Potential Field, Electrical/Electromagnetic Methods), Paper-III (Seismic Prospecting, Well Logging, Atomic/Molecular Physics).

Chemist: Paper-I (Inorganic Chemistry), Paper-II (Physical Chemistry), Paper-III (Analytical & Organic Chemistry).
