Competitive Exam Details

The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) conducts the Gazetted Probationers Examination, universally known as the KAS (Karnataka Administrative Service) exam. It is the most esteemed and authoritative state-level recruitment drive in Karnataka, akin to the UPSC Civil Services. Successful candidates are recruited directly into top-tier Group 'A' and Group 'B' administrative posts, including Assistant Commissioner (Sub-Divisional Magistrate), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, and Tahsildar. The examination offers massive societal prestige, profound executive authority across the state districts, and highly lucrative state pay scales.

The KAS recruitment is an exhaustive, three-stage process: Preliminary, Main, and Interview. The Preliminary Examination is purely an objective screening test consisting of two papers (Paper I and Paper II), each worth 200 marks, to be solved in 2 hours per paper. Both papers test a mix of General Studies, Humanities, Science, Technology, and Mental Ability. Notably, the Prelims features a 0.25 (1/4th) negative marking for incorrect answers.

Candidates who clear the Prelims enter the Main Examination, which is entirely descriptive. In a highly candidate-friendly move, KPSC abolished Optional Subjects a few years ago. The Mains now consists of qualifying language papers (Kannada and English) and five compulsory merit-deciding papers: an Essay paper and four General Studies papers (covering Polity, Public Administration, Economy, Science, and Ethics). Candidates must possess profound analytical skills and an intrinsic understanding of Karnataka's historical, political, and socio-economic frameworks to excel in Mains. The final merit is formulated by combining the scores of the Main written exam and the Personality Test (Interview).
