Competitive Exam Details

The Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS) examination is the most elite, highly revered, and powerful administrative recruitment in the state. Serving as a RAS officer or a Rajasthan Police Service (RPS) officer guarantees immense grassroots administrative authority, a highly prestigious social standing, and rapid promotional avenues leading to induction into the IAS/IPS cadre. Unlike other states where the civil service exam is fragmented, RPSC conducts a single combined examination for a vast array of State Services (like SDM, DSP, Commercial Tax Officer) and Subordinate Services (like Tehsildar).

The recruitment process spans three highly competitive stages. The Preliminary Examination is a single-paper objective test consisting of 150 questions (worth 200 marks) to be solved in 3 hours. It covers General Knowledge and General Science, with a heavy, uncompromising emphasis on the history, geography, and economy of Rajasthan. There is a negative marking of 1/3rd for incorrect answers. The Prelims is strictly a screening test; its marks are not added to the final merit.

Candidates who breach the Prelims cut-off advance to the Main Examination. Unlike UPSC or MPSC, the RPSC RAS Mains does not have any Optional Subject. The Mains consists of four compulsory descriptive papers (200 marks each) covering History, Polity, Public Administration, Economics, Science, Ethics, and Language (Hindi and English). The answers require extreme precision, as questions are strictly divided into 15-word, 50-word, and 100-word limits. Finally, candidates who clear Mains must face a 100-mark Personality Test (Interview). For graduates deeply rooted in Rajasthan's culture, this is the paramount career goal.

Q1: Can out-of-state candidates apply for the RPSC RAS exam?
A1: Yes, candidates from any state can apply. However, they are treated as General category candidates and receive no reservation benefits. Furthermore, clearing the exam without an extensive, deep study of Rajasthan's specialized history, geography, and culture is virtually impossible.
Q2: Does the RAS exam have an Optional Subject in the Mains?
A2: No. This is a massive advantage for candidates who want a level playing field. The RPSC completely abolished optional subjects. All candidates must write the exact same four General Studies and Language papers, eliminating any scaling or moderation controversies.
Q3: What are the word limits in the RAS Mains examination?
A3: RPSC demands absolute brevity. Questions are strictly categorized. You must answer 2-mark questions in exactly 15 words, 5-mark questions in 50 words, and 10-mark questions in 100 words. Exceeding word limits wastes time and penalizes scores.
Q4: Is there an age relaxation for female candidates in the RAS exam?
A4: Yes. The general age limit is 21 to 40 years. However, female candidates belonging to the General category get a 5-year relaxation (up to 45 years), and female candidates from reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/MBC of Rajasthan) get a massive 10-year age relaxation (up to 50 years).
