Competitive Exam Details

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Rajyaseva examination is the most prestigious, powerful, and elite civil services recruitment drive in the state of Maharashtra. Modeled closely on the UPSC Civil Services Examination, it serves as the direct entry point for top-tier Group 'A' and Group 'B' administrative, police, and revenue posts. Successful candidates are appointed to highly authoritative positions such as Deputy Collector (equivalent to SDM), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), Tahsildar, and Assistant Commissioner of State Tax. These roles offer unparalleled administrative power, the ability to shape state policy implementation, deep societal reverence, and a highly lucrative state government salary package.

The MPSC Rajyaseva has recently undergone massive structural reforms to mirror the UPSC pattern, shifting from an objective Mains format to a highly rigorous Descriptive Mains format. The recruitment is a year-long marathon divided into three grueling stages. Stage-I is the Preliminary Examination, consisting of two objective papers: General Studies (Paper-1) and CSAT (Paper-2). Similar to UPSC, the CSAT paper is now strictly qualifying (requiring a minimum of 33% marks), making the 200-mark GS paper the sole decider for Prelims qualification, paired with a 1/4th negative marking penalty.

Stage-II is the Main Examination, which is a massive written descriptive test consisting of 9 papers (totalling 1750 marks). This includes qualifying language papers (Marathi and English), an Essay paper, four General Studies papers, and two papers of an Optional Subject chosen by the candidate. This descriptive shift requires profound analytical writing skills, deep knowledge of Maharashtra's socio-economic geography, and intellectual stamina. Finally, candidates who clear the Mains face Stage-III: a 275-mark Personal Interview. Final merit is the aggregate of the Mains and Interview marks.

Q1: Is knowledge of the Marathi language mandatory for the MPSC Rajyaseva exam?
A1: Yes, absolutely. Candidates must have sufficient knowledge of the Marathi language. In the Main Examination, there is a mandatory, qualifying 300-mark descriptive paper in Marathi. Furthermore, administrative operations in the state are conducted in Marathi, making fluency non-negotiable.
Q2: Since the Mains pattern changed to descriptive, can I write my answers in English?
A2: Yes. Candidates have the option to answer the Main Examination papers (General Studies and Optional subjects) in either Marathi or English, depending on their comfort level and graduation medium.
Q3: Is the CSAT paper marks added to the Prelims cut-off?
A3: No. Following recent rule changes, MPSC has made the CSAT (Paper-2) purely qualifying. You must score at least 33% (66 marks out of 200) to pass. However, only your score in GS (Paper-1) will determine whether you make the cut-off for the Mains exam.
Q4: Are final-year graduation students eligible to sit for the Prelims?
A4: Yes, final-year degree students can apply and appear for the Preliminary examination. However, they must provide proof of passing the degree examination before the detailed application form for the Main examination is submitted.
