Competitive Exam Details

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), operating as an Armed Force of the Union under the Ministry of Defence, conducts a highly rigorous and extremely popular recruitment drive for the posts of Navik (General Duty) and Navik (Domestic Branch). While it functions alongside the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard has its own distinct mandate: protecting India's maritime zones, preventing smuggling, and conducting massive search and rescue operations at sea. Enrolling as a Navik offers 10th and 12th-pass youth a fast-tracked entry into a thrilling, disciplined military lifestyle, complete with exceptional central government pay scales, free medical facilities, canteen stores department (CSD) benefits, and an adventurous life on advanced patrol vessels.

The recruitment process is scientifically structured and completely transparent, known as the Coast Guard Enrolled Personnel Test (CGEPT). It occurs in four intense stages. Stage-I is the Computer Based Test (CBT). For Navik (DB), candidates attempt only Section I (a 10th-level aptitude test). For Navik (GD), candidates must attempt both Section I AND Section II (a 12th-level Math and Physics test). A critical rule here is that Navik (GD) candidates must pass Section I and Section II separately; failing either section leads to instant disqualification.

Candidates clearing the CBT are called for Stage-II, which involves stringent Document Verification and the Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The PFT includes a 1.6 km run in 7 minutes, 20 squat-ups, and 10 push-ups. Following this, an initial medical examination is conducted. Stage-III is the final filter, held at INS Chilka (Odisha), involving the ultimate, uncompromising Final Medical Examination. Because the Coast Guard operates in harsh, unforgiving maritime environments, candidates with even minor physical or visual defects are rejected. For robust youth looking for an honorable uniform and a life at sea, the ICG Navik is a stellar opportunity.
