Competitive Exam Details

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) Review Officer (RO) and Assistant Review Officer (ARO) examination is one of the most prestigious, powerful, and fiercely contested civil service exams in the state. Popularly known as Samiksha Adhikari, this role places officers directly into the heartbeat of the state’s administration: the UP Secretariat (Sachivalaya) in Lucknow, the UPPSC Bhawan in Prayagraj, and the Board of Revenue. It offers immense bureaucratic power, a stellar salary (Level-8 for RO), a fixed capital-city posting avoiding the stress of district transfers, and a highly predictable Monday-to-Friday work-life balance that even higher-ranking PCS officers envy.

Because the RO/ARO exam does not require an interview, the competition is staggering, often drawing the same crowd of elite aspirants preparing for the UPSC CSE and UPPSC PCS. The selection is a two-stage written process: Prelims and Mains. The Prelims is an objective test comprising two papers held on the same day: General Studies (140 questions) and General Hindi (60 questions). The 60-mark Hindi vocabulary section is the legendary rank-decider of this exam, demanding absolute rote memorization of complex Hindi synonyms, antonyms, and spellings.

Candidates clearing the Prelims advance to the Mains Examination, which is a massive 400-mark assessment. It includes Objective General Studies (120 marks), Conventional Hindi Drafting (100 marks), Objective Hindi Vocabulary (30 marks), and a highly challenging Hindi Essay paper (120 marks) where candidates must write three comprehensive essays in the Devnagari script. While the RO post requires only a simple graduation degree, the ARO post strictly requires an 'O' Level computer certificate from NIELIT and mandates a Hindi typing test. For graduates with a strong command of the Hindi language, this exam is the crown jewel of state secretariat jobs.
