Competitive Exam Details

The State Bank of India (SBI) Clerk, officially designated as Junior Associate (Customer Support & Sales), is unequivocally the most sought-after clerical recruitment drive in the Indian financial sector. Securing a position in the nation's largest public sector bank provides candidates with immense job security, an excellent starting salary (with more allowances than standard IBPS clerks), and unparalleled opportunities for incredibly fast internal promotions. A Junior Associate serves as the critical primary interface for the bank, handling daily branch operations, customer grievances, cash management, and cross-selling financial products.

The recruitment is conducted on a strict state-wise/circle-wise basis. Candidates must apply for a specific state and are legally required to be fully proficient in the local official language of that state (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding). The selection process is a high-speed, two-tier online mechanism. Phase-I is the Preliminary Examination, a 60-minute qualifying test with 100 questions covering English Language, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning. The defining feature of SBI exams (both PO and Clerk) is the complete absence of sectional cut-offs. Candidates only need to clear the overall state-wise aggregate cut-off, though a strict 20-minute sectional timer prevents them from jumping between subjects.

Phase-II is the Main Examination, a grueling 160-minute test consisting of 190 questions worth 200 marks. It tests General/Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude. Because there is no personal interview for the clerical cadre, the final merit list is generated 100% based on the marks scored in the Main Examination. However, candidates must clear a stringent Local Language Proficiency Test (LPT) before receiving their joining letter. For graduates seeking a stable, desk-bound career with the prestige of the SBI badge, this exam is the ultimate target.

Q1: Is there a limit on the number of attempts for the SBI Clerk exam like there is for SBI PO?
A1: No. Unlike the SBI PO examination which strictly caps the number of attempts (4 for General category), the SBI Clerk examination has absolutely no limit on the number of attempts, provided the candidate falls within the prescribed age limit
Q2: Will I be transferred across India if I am selected as an SBI Clerk?
A2: No. Junior Associates are recruited on a state/circle basis. Your postings and transfers will generally be restricted to the specific state or circle for which you applied, ensuring geographical stability throughout your clerical career.
Q3: What happens if I fail the Local Language Proficiency Test (LPT)?
A3: If you cannot produce a 10th or 12th standard mark sheet proving you studied the local language, you must take the LPT after clearing Mains. The LPT is highly rigorous. If you fail to demonstrate fluency in reading, writing, and speaking the local language, your candidacy will be instantly cancelled.
Q4: Are final-year graduation students eligible to apply for SBI Clerk?
A4: Yes, candidates in their final year/semester of graduation can apply provisionally. However, they must be able to produce proof of having passed the graduation examination on or before the crucial date mentioned in the official notification.
