Competitive Exam Details

The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is a monumental, national-level qualifying examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) under the mandate of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). It is critical for candidates to understand that CTET is an eligibility test, not a direct recruitment exam. Securing a CTET certificate does not guarantee a job; rather, it is the absolute mandatory prerequisite to apply for central government teaching jobs such as Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB), and various prestigious central and state-level government schools. Following recent NCTE guidelines, the CTET certificate now boasts a lifetime validity.

The CTET is traditionally conducted offline (OMR-based) and is divided into two distinct papers based on the grade level the candidate intends to teach. Paper-I is for candidates intending to teach Classes I to V (Primary Stage). Paper-II is for candidates intending to teach Classes VI to VIII (Elementary Stage). Candidates aiming to teach at both levels must appear for both papers. Each paper is a 150-minute marathon comprising 150 objective-type questions. A universally celebrated feature of the CTET is that there is absolutely no negative marking, encouraging candidates to attempt every single question.

The core philosophy of the CTET examination revolves heavily around Child Development and Pedagogy (CDP). Unlike standard competitive exams that test raw mathematical or historical facts, CTET tests how a teacher should impart that knowledge to a child. The syllabus emphasizes educational psychology, inclusive education, identifying learning disabilities, and the pedagogical methods of teaching languages, mathematics, and environmental sciences. To qualify, candidates must score 60% (90 out of 150 marks) for the General category, with standard relaxations for reserved categories.

Q1: Can candidates with only a B.Ed degree apply for Primary Teacher (Paper-I)?
A1: Based on the latest Hon'ble Supreme Court judgment, candidates possessing a B.Ed degree are no longer eligible to become Primary Teachers (Classes I-V). B.Ed candidates can only apply for Paper-II (Classes VI-VIII). Candidates must hold a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed / BTC) to apply for Paper-I.
Q2: What is the validity period of the CTET qualifying certificate?
A2: The Government of India has officially extended the validity period of the CTET qualifying certificate from 7 years to lifetime for all categories.
Q3: Is there any negative marking for wrong answers in the CTET exam?
A3: No. There is zero negative marking in both Paper-I and Paper-II. Candidates are strongly advised to attempt all 150 questions before the time runs out.
Q4: Are the CTET marks added to the final merit list for KVS or DSSSB jobs?
A4: Generally, no. CTET is strictly a qualifying screening gate. For most central recruitment bodies like KVS or NVS, your final merit is based entirely on the specific written exam and interview conducted by that specific organization, not your CTET score (provided you scored the minimum 90 marks to qualify).
