Competitive Exam Details

The Railway Recruitment Board Assistant Loco Pilot (RRB ALP) & Technician examination is the ultimate recruitment drive for technically qualified youth (ITI, Diploma, and B.Tech graduates) seeking a high-thrill, highly responsible, and immensely lucrative career in the Indian Railways. The Assistant Loco Pilot is responsible for assisting the Loco Pilot in the safe and efficient operation of passenger and freight trains across the vast Indian railway network. It is a highly demanding, operational field job that offers fantastic running allowances, taking the gross salary far beyond standard Level-2 pay scales. Alternatively, the Technician posts offer stable, highly skilled workshop and maintenance roles ensuring the health of railway rolling stock and signaling infrastructure.

The selection process is uniquely structured and notoriously rigorous, evaluating both general aptitude and deep core technical knowledge. CBT-1 is the initial screening round, featuring 75 questions (Math, General Intelligence, Science, and Current Affairs) in 60 minutes. Candidates who clear CBT-1 move to the decisive CBT-2, which is split into two parts on the same day. Part A (100 questions, 90 mins) covers Math, Reasoning, and a specialized subject: Basic Science & Engineering (which includes engineering drawing, levers, heat, mass, and occupational safety). The marks from Part A are used for preparing the final merit list.

Part B (75 questions, 60 mins) is the ultimate trap. It is a qualifying Trade Test strictly based on the candidate's chosen technical trade (e.g., Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic). Candidates must score at least 35% in Part B, failing which their excellent Part A score is completely voided. Finally, for the ALP post specifically, candidates must undergo a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), popularly known as the Psycho Test, followed by the strictest medical examination in the government sector (the dreaded A-1 vision standard).

Q1: Are B.Tech or Diploma engineering graduates eligible to apply for the ALP post?
A1: Yes. Candidates holding a Degree or Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering are highly eligible for the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) post. However, they are generally not eligible for the Technician posts, which strictly require an ITI certificate in the specific trade.
Q2: What is the "A-1" medical vision standard required for ALP?
A2: The A-1 vision standard is exceptionally strict. Candidates must have a distant vision of 6/6 in both eyes without glasses. Furthermore, candidates must pass stringent tests for Color Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision, and Night Vision. Candidates who wear spectacles or have undergone LASIK surgery are strictly disqualified for the ALP post.
Q3: If I fail CBT-2 Part B (Trade Test), will I still be considered for a job?
A3: No. Part B is qualifying in nature, and securing a minimum of 35% marks is absolutely mandatory. If you fail to score 35% in your specific technical trade test, your Part A scores are nullified, and you are disqualified from the recruitment entirely.
Q4: What is the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for ALP?
A4: Commonly called the "Psycho Test," the CBAT evaluates a candidate's cognitive reflexes, spatial visualization, concentration, and reaction time under pressure. It consists of multiple "batteries" (mini-tests), and candidates must qualify in each battery individually. There is no negative marking in the CBAT.

CBT-1 (Screening): Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences up to 10th standard), General Awareness on Current Affairs.

CBT-2 (Part A - Merit Deciding): Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning. Basic Science and Engineering: Engineering Drawing (Projections, Views, Drawing Instruments, Lines, Geometric figures), Units, Measurements, Mass Weight and Density, Work Power and Energy, Speed and Velocity, Heat and Temperature, Basic Electricity, Levers and Simple Machines, Occupational Safety and Health, Environment Education, IT Literacy.

CBT-2 (Part B - Qualifying Trade Test): Questions strictly from the trade syllabus prescribed by Director General of Employment & Training (DGET) for ITI trades like Electrician, Fitter, Welder, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Wireman, etc.
