Competitive Exam Details

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) Clerk examination is the largest, most reliable, and highly anticipated clerical recruitment drive in the Indian banking sector. Through the Common Recruitment Process (CRP), IBPS recruits thousands of dynamic graduates every year to serve as Single Window Operators and Customer Service Associates across 11 major participating Public Sector Banks (PSBs) like Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, and Canara Bank. An IBPS Clerk serves as the primary face of the bank, handling daily customer transactions, deposits, withdrawals, and account management. The job offers immense stability, a fixed desk-job routine, banking perks, and a fast-tracked internal promotion channel to the Officer (PO) cadre through JAIIB/CAIIB exams.

A critical aspect of the IBPS Clerk exam is its state-wise vacancy structure. Candidates apply for vacancies in a specific state and are strictly required to possess reading, writing, and speaking proficiency in the official regional language of that state. The recruitment is a highly fast-paced, two-phase online process. The Preliminary Examination is a 60-minute qualifying sprint with 100 questions divided into English Language, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning Ability. Strict sectional timing (20 minutes per section) ensures candidates cannot borrow time across subjects.

Candidates who clear the state-wise Prelims cut-off advance to the Main Examination. The Mains is a grueling 160-minute test comprising 190 questions worth 200 marks. It tests General/Financial Awareness, General English, Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude, and Quantitative Aptitude. Following the mandate of the Government of India for clerical cadre posts, there is no personal interview. The final merit list and bank allocation are generated exclusively based on the marks secured in the Main Examination. However, candidates must clear a localized Language Proficiency Test (LPT) before joining, making home-state applications highly preferable.

Q1: Can I apply for IBPS Clerk vacancies in a state other than my home state?
A1: Yes, you can apply from any state where vacancies are listed. However, you must be thoroughly proficient (read, write, and speak) in the official local language of that state. The bank will conduct a strict Language Proficiency Test (LPT) before joining. If you fail the LPT, your selection is cancelled.
Q2: Is there a personal interview for the IBPS Clerk post?
A2: No. As per Central Government guidelines for clerical cadre recruitments, the interview round has been completely abolished. Your final selection and bank allotment are based 100% on your score in the Main Examination.
Q3: What are sectional timings and sectional cut-offs?
A3: Sectional timing means each subject is allotted a fixed time (e.g., 20 mins for English). Once the timer ends, that section locks automatically. Sectional cut-off means you must secure a minimum qualifying score in each individual subject to pass the exam, not just an overall high total.
Q4: Is there a negative marking penalty in IBPS Clerk exams?
A4: Yes. Both the Preliminary and Main examinations carry a strict negative marking penalty. For every incorrect answer, 0.25 (1/4th) of the marks assigned to that question are deducted.
