Competitive Exam Details

The Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories (RRB NTPC) examination is arguably the most highly anticipated, massive, and prestigious non-technical recruitment drive in the Indian government sector. Designed to fill tens of thousands of vacancies across various Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), this exam caters to both 12th-pass (Undergraduate) and Graduate candidates. It recruits for highly coveted, authoritative desk and operational roles such as Station Master, Commercial Apprentice, Goods Guard, Senior Clerk cum Typist, and Junior Account Assistant. For millions of aspirants, RRB NTPC represents the pinnacle of railway employment, offering fantastic 7th CPC salary structures (ranging from Level 2 to Level 6), tremendous job security, free railway passes, and unparalleled social respect.

The selection process is exhaustive and designed to filter the best from millions of applicants. It involves a two-stage Computer Based Test (CBT). CBT-1 is a preliminary screening test consisting of 100 questions (Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Awareness) to be solved in 90 minutes. Marks from CBT-1 are heavily normalized and used solely to shortlist candidates (usually 20 times the vacancy) for CBT-2. The second stage, CBT-2, is the true rank-decider. It ramps up the difficulty, asking 120 questions in the same 90-minute window, testing extreme speed and accuracy under a strict 1/3rd negative marking penalty.

Depending on the specific post applied for, candidates who clear CBT-2 must undergo a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for Station Master and Traffic Assistant roles, or a Typing Skill Test for clerical roles. Because there is no personal interview, the final merit is determined entirely by the CBT-2 score (and CBAT score where applicable), followed by rigorous Document Verification and Medical Examination. The medical standards for operational posts like Station Master (A2 standard) are highly stringent regarding visual acuity. RRB NTPC is the ultimate target for candidates seeking a high-status central government career without the requirement of an engineering or technical background.

Q1: Can 12th-pass candidates apply for the Station Master or Goods Guard posts?
A1: No. RRB NTPC posts are strictly divided into Undergraduate (12th pass) and Graduate levels. Station Master, Goods Guard, and Commercial Apprentice are Level 5 and 6 posts requiring a Bachelor's degree. 12th-pass candidates can only apply for Level 2 and 3 posts like Junior Clerk cum Typist and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk.
Q2: How does the RRB Normalization process work?
A2: Because the exam is conducted over dozens of shifts across several months, the difficulty level of the question paper varies. RRB uses a statistical normalization formula to equate the scores across all shifts, ensuring no candidate is unfairly disadvantaged by a tougher paper.
Q3: Is the Typing Skill Test conducted in both English and Hindi?
A3: Candidates can choose to take the typing test in either English or Hindi. For English, a minimum speed of 30 words per minute (WPM) is required, and for Hindi (Kruti Dev or Mangal font), 25 WPM is required on a computer.
Q4: What happens if I clear the written exam but fail the medical test for Station Master?
A4: Station Master requires strict "A2" medical fitness (6/9 vision without glasses). If you fail this specific medical test but clear the overall cut-offs, the Railways will automatically consider you for alternative lower-medical-standard posts (like Senior Clerk) provided you meet their specific CBT-2 cut-offs.
