Competitive Exam Details

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Selection Posts examination is one of the most unique, diverse, and strategically important recruitment drives in the Indian government sector. Unlike SSC CGL or CHSL, which recruit for standardized bulk posts, the Selection Posts (such as Phase XIV for the year 2026) are designed to fill specialized, niche, and isolated vacancies across hundreds of different Central Government Ministries, Departments, and Attached/Subordinate Offices. Because these vacancies range from 1 or 2 seats in a specialized lab to 50 seats in a regional ministry office, the competition dynamics are entirely different, often providing a "backdoor" entry into highly prestigious central government jobs for smart, observant candidates.

The Selection Posts are categorized into three distinct educational levels: Matriculation (10th Pass), Higher Secondary (10+2 Pass), and Graduation & Above. Candidates can apply for multiple posts across different ministries, provided they meet the specific educational and technical criteria for each. However, the brilliance of this exam lies in its CBT structure: regardless of how many posts a candidate applies for within a specific educational level (e.g., Graduation), they only have to appear for one common Computer Based Test for that level.

The CBT comprises 100 questions (200 marks) to be solved in 60 minutes, covering General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Language. Following the CBT, there is no Tier II or Tier III. Candidates who clear the CBT cut-off for their applied post are directly called for Scrutiny of Documents by the specific regional SSC office, followed by a Skill Test (only if required by that specific post, like typing or data entry). Because many posts require specific degrees (e.g., B.Sc. in Botany, Diploma in Civil Engineering, or basic experience certificates), the actual competition for individual posts is often shockingly low compared to mainstream exams.

Q1: Can I apply for multiple posts across different educational levels?
A1: Yes. You can apply for a Matriculation level post, a Higher Secondary post, and a Graduate level post simultaneously. However, you will have to pay separate application fees for each post and appear for three separate CBT exams (one for each educational level).
Q2: Is there a Tier-II or descriptive paper for the Selection Posts?
A2: No. The major advantage of the Selection Post exam is that it is a single-stage written test (CBT). There is no Tier-II exam. Final merit is based entirely on the marks scored in the 60-minute CBT.
Q3: What does the "Scrutiny of Documents" phase entail?
A3: Because Selection Posts often have very specific requirements (e.g., 2 years of experience in an analytical lab), SSC requires shortlisted candidates to physically mail hard copies of their educational and experience certificates to the regional office for strict verification before the final merit list is made.
Q4: Is there a negative marking in the CBT?
A4: Yes. The exam carries a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each incorrect answer (since each correct answer is awarded 2 marks, the penalty is 1/4th).
