Competitive Exam Details

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Social Security Assistant (SSA) examination is a highly coveted recruitment drive for one of the most prestigious clerical-cadre positions in the Central Government. Operating under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, EPFO is the world’s largest social security organization in terms of clientele and the volume of financial transactions undertaken. Securing an SSA position is highly desirable because it offers a fantastic Level-5 salary structure (substantially higher than standard bank clerks or state-level LDCs), Central Government perks, an excellent work-life balance, and postings generally localized to the specific state region applied for.

The recruitment process has evolved to be highly competitive and is typically conducted in two distinct phases by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of EPFO. Phase I is the main Computer Based Examination (CBT). This is a single-stage, rigorous 150-minute objective test consisting of 150 questions worth a massive 600 marks (each question carries 4 marks). The paper is uniquely structured into five sections: General Aptitude, General Knowledge/General Awareness, Quantitative Ability, General English with Comprehension, and Computer Literacy. The defining characteristic of the EPFO SSA exam is the extraordinarily high weightage given to the English section—comprising 50 questions worth 200 marks—making it the ultimate rank-decider.

Candidates who clear the Phase I cut-off (which is usually determined region-wise) must appear for Phase II, which is the Computer Skill Test (Typing Test). The skill test is purely qualifying in nature but demands strict precision: a typing speed of 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi on a computer. Because there is no personal interview, the final merit list is prepared entirely based on the marks secured in the Phase I CBT. For graduates looking for a high-paying, desk-based government job with predictable promotional avenues (up to Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer ranks), the EPFO SSA is a primary target
