Scholarship Exam Details

The MEXT Scholarship (also known as Monbukagakusho Scholarship) is offered by the Government of Japan to international students, including Indians, who want to study in Japan at the Undergraduate, Masters, PhD, Teacher Training, or Research levels. It is one of the most prestigious fully-funded scholarships in the world, and it covers 100% tuition fees, Round-trip Airfare, Monthly Living Allowance, Hostel/Accommodation support, and sometimes research grants, depending on the program. MEXT aims to promote international education and cultural exchange by inviting talented students to study in Japanese universities.

The application process usually begins around April–June every year, and the selection is conducted by the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in India. The process includes Document Screening, Written Examinations, Interview, and final approval by Japan’s Ministry of Education. The scholarship period ranges from 4-5 years for Undergraduate, 2 years for Masters, and 3+ years for PhD students. Students may also undergo Japanese Language Training for 6–12 months before starting their degree program, especially if the chosen course is taught in Japanese. Many universities provide English-taught programs, especially at graduate levels.
