Scholarship Exam Details

The SN Bose Scholars Program is a premier exchange program between the Govt. of India and the United States (IUSSTF). It allows Indian students in their 3rd or 4th year of B.Tech/M.Sc. to spend 10 to 12 weeks during the summer at top-tier US universities like Harvard, MIT, or Stanford for research. This is an elite scholarship that provides a stipend of $2,500 (~₹2 Lakhs), round-trip airfare, and health insurance. Unlike a standard internship, this program provides a "Scholar" status, giving you access to high-end US laboratories and the chance to work with world-renowned scientists. It is intended to build a bridge between Indian and American science ecosystems. Selection is extremely competitive and is primarily based on the student's research potential, their Statement of Purpose, and the reputation of their current Indian institution.

Q1: Is there a written exam for SN Bose selection?
A1: No written exam is required. Selection is done based on academic merit, the quality of the Research Proposal, and the strength of the Letters of Recommendation (LORs).
Q2: Which fields of study are covered?
A2: The program is open to Atmospheric and Earth Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences. It does not cover social sciences or clinical medicine.
Q3: What is the minimum CGPA required to be competitive?
A3: While the official minimum is often 8.0, the "effective" cutoff for selection is usually 9.2 or higher given the limited number of seats (around 50 per year).
Q4: Do I need to find my own host professor in the USA?
A4: No, the program coordinators assist in the placement. However, identifying a specific lab or professor in your application and explaining why their work aligns with yours significantly improves your chances.

No Written Exam Required. Selection is based on:

  • Research Interest: Depth and feasibility of the proposed summer project.

  • Academic Excellence: Top-tier CGPA and class rank.

  • Institutional Reputation: Performance of your current college in research rankings.
