Scholarship Exam Details

The Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Awards is a national competition to harness the creative and innovative spirit of school children. Organized by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), it is not a traditional "marks-based" scholarship. Instead, it is a Research and Innovation Award. Students from Class 1 to 12 (or even school dropouts up to age 17) are encouraged to submit original, creative technological ideas and innovations that solve day-to-day problems. Winners receive a citation, a trophy, and most importantly, full financial and technical support to turn their idea into a real-world prototype or product. In 2026, top winners are invited to display their projects before the President of India and receive mentorship from India's top scientists and patent attorneys. It is the ultimate platform for "Junior Inventors."

Important Dates

Opening Date: 06-Apr-2026 02:14 PM

Closing Date: 06-Apr-2026 02:14 PM

Q1: Do I need a working model to apply for IGNITE?
A1: No, you do not need a finished product. You can apply with just a creative idea or a rough sketch of an invention. If your idea is selected for its originality and social impact, the NIF will help you build the model, provide the lab space, and even file a patent in your name for free.
Q2: Is there any entry fee or restriction on themes?
A2: There is no entry fee. You can submit ideas in any field—agriculture, energy, environment, daily household chores, or assistive tech for the disabled. The only rule is that the idea must be Original and Unseen in the market.
Q3: Can a team of students apply together?
A3: Yes, groups of students can submit a joint innovation. If selected, the award is shared by the team members. This is highly encouraged as it mimics real-world research environments where teams work together to solve problems.
Q4: What is the last date to apply for the 2026 awards?
A4: The awards are usually announced on October 15th (Dr. Kalam's Birthday). The submission cycle typically closes in late August. You can submit your ideas through email, post, or the official NIF website.

No Written Exam Required. Evaluation is based on:

  • Originality: The idea must be new and not a copy of existing technology.

  • Practicality: The idea should be feasible to build and use.

  • Social Impact: Does the invention solve a common problem for many people?

  • Creativity: Out-of-the-box thinking and "Jugaad" innovation.
