Scholarship Exam Details

The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is arguably the most prestigious school-level scholarship in India, conducted by the NCERT. It is a two-tier scholarship program meant to identify and nurture high-potential students. Students who qualify for the NTSE are known as "NTSE Scholars" and receive a scholarship throughout their education, from Class 11 up to the Doctoral level. For 2026, the scholarship amount is ₹1,250 per month for Class 11-12 and ₹2,000 per month for Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies. At the PhD level, the scholarship is paid as per UGC norms. The NTSE is a "Status Symbol" in Indian education; being an NTSE Scholar often leads to a "direct entry" or heavy weightage in interviews for top coaching institutes, private colleges, and even some jobs. The exam is conducted in two stages: Stage 1 (State Level) and Stage 2 (National Level).

Q1: What is the eligibility for NTSE Stage 1?
A1: Any student currently studying in Class 10 in any recognized school (including KV, NV, and Private schools) is eligible. Unlike NMMS, NTSE has no income limit, making it a pure merit-based competition open to all students regardless of their family's financial status.
Q2: How many scholarships are awarded annually?
A2: NCERT awards 2,000 scholarships every year for the entire country. Given that millions of students apply, the success rate is extremely low, making it one of the most competitive exams in the world for 15-year-olds.
Q3: Can Indian students studying abroad apply for NTSE?
A3: Yes, Indian students studying abroad in Class 10 are eligible to directly appear for the Stage 2 (National Level) exam. They are exempted from the Stage 1 state-level screening, provided they have secured at least 60% marks in their previous annual examination.
Q4: Is there any reservation in NTSE?
A4: Yes, as per central government norms, there is reservation for SC (15%), ST (7.5%), OBC (27% non-creamy layer), and EWS (10%). There is also a 4% reservation for Physically Challenged (PC) students. Candidates must provide valid certificates during the Stage 1 application.
