As of 2022, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has subsumed the KVPY aptitude test into the INSPIRE Scholarship program. However, the legacy of KVPY continues for ongoing fellows, and new aspirants now look toward the INSPIRE-SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) for similar research-focused funding. In its classic form, KVPY was the most prestigious national fellowship for basic sciences in India, administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. It identified students with a high aptitude for research and provided a monthly fellowship of ₹5,000 to ₹7,000, plus an annual contingency grant of up to ₹28,000. KVPY fellows also gained privileged access to national libraries, world-class research labs, and summer camps at premier institutes like the IISERs and IITs. For 2026, while the exam is merged, the "KVPY Fellow" tag remains a symbol of scientific excellence on any global CV.
