Competitive Exam Details

The IBPS PO (Probationary Officer) exam is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection to recruit officers in Public Sector Banks across India. The recruitment process consists of three stages: Preliminary Exam, Main Exam, and Interview. The Prelims exam is qualifying in nature and includes English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability for a total of 100 marks in 60 minutes. Candidates who clear it appear for the Mains exam, which includes Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, English Language, and General/Economy/Banking Awareness, along with a Descriptive Writing section; the exam is of 200 objective marks + 25 descriptive marks, and lasts 180 minutes plus extra time for descriptive writing. Candidates shortlisted from Mains are called for a Personal Interview, which carries 25 marks. The final merit list is prepared based on Mains (80% weightage) and Interview (20% weightage). There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for wrong answers in both Prelims and Mains. To be eligible, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree. The selected candidates join as Probationary Officers, where they undergo training and handle tasks like customer service, loan processing, supervising clerical work, and assisting branch management. The starting in-hand salary is generally between ₹40,000 to ₹47,000 per month, depending on city posting and allowances.
