Competitive Exam Details

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Group 4 examination is one of the most colossal and fiercely competitive recruitment drives in Southern India. Catering to candidates who have passed their SSLC (10th Standard), this exam recruits thousands of individuals for foundational administrative roles across various Tamil Nadu government departments. The most highly coveted posts include Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant, Typist, and Steno-Typist. Securing a Group 4 job offers immense prestige within the state, localized postings, lifelong job security, and a very structured promotional ladder leading up to Group 2 and Group 1 level gazetted officer ranks over the course of a career.

The beauty and intense competitiveness of the TNPSC Group 4 exam lie in its highly streamlined, single-stage selection process. There is no Preliminary/Mains division and absolutely no personal interview. The fate of millions of candidates is decided by a single 3-hour offline (OMR-based) written examination consisting of 200 objective questions worth 300 marks. The paper is strategically divided. Part A is the mandatory Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (100 questions). A candidate must score a minimum of 40% in this section, otherwise, their Part B will not even be evaluated. However, the marks of Part A are added to the final merit ranking, making Tamil proficiency the ultimate rank-decider.

Part B consists of General Studies (75 questions) and Aptitude & Mental Ability (25 questions). Another massive advantage of this exam is the total absence of negative marking, encouraging candidates to attempt every single question. However, because guessing is permitted and the educational barrier is just 10th pass, the cut-offs skyrocket to astronomical levels. Candidates clearing the cut-off are directly called for physical Document Verification and counseling for post allocation. For native Tamil speakers, this is the golden ticket to state government employment.

Q2: What is the educational qualification for the Typist and Steno-Typist posts?
A2: Along with a 10th standard pass, candidates applying for Typist/Steno-Typist must possess Government Technical Education certificates in Typewriting (and Shorthand for Stenos) in both English and Tamil.
Q3: What is the age limit for the VAO (Village Administrative Officer) post?
A3: Unlike other Group 4 posts which have a minimum age of 18, the VAO post strictly requires candidates to be a minimum of 21 years of age. The maximum age goes up to 42 years for reserved categories (SC/ST/MBC/BC).
Q4: Is there any negative marking in the TNPSC Group 4 exam?
A4: No. TNPSC does not deduct any marks for wrong answers in the Group 4 examination. Candidates must bubble all 200 questions on the OMR sheet.
