The Uttar Pradesh Police Sub-Inspector (UP SI) examination is the most coveted and highly respected uniformed recruitment drive in the state. Popularly referred to as the "Daroga" recruitment, wearing the two stars of a Sub-Inspector in UP Police carries immense social prestige, grassroots administrative power, and tremendous authority in maintaining law and order across India's largest state. The UP SI exam recruits for Civil Police, Platoon Commanders in the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and Fire Service Second Officers. The competition is incredibly fierce, attracting millions of graduates from UP and neighboring states drawn by the excellent Level-6 salary scale, job security, and the sheer pride of the uniform.
The selection process is rigorous, combining deep academic testing with strict physical standards. It begins with an Online Written Examination carrying 400 marks. The paper consists of 160 objective-type questions divided into four sections: General Hindi (40 Qs), Basic Law/Constitution & General Knowledge (40 Qs), Numerical & Mental Ability (40 Qs), and Mental Aptitude/IQ/Logical Reasoning (40 Qs). A unique and highly challenging feature of the UP SI exam is the sectional cut-off. Candidates must score a minimum of 35% in each of the four sections, and an overall aggregate of 50%, just to qualify. Failure to secure 35% in even one section (most commonly Basic Law or Math) results in instant disqualification, regardless of the total score.
Interestingly, there is typically no negative marking in the UP SI written exam, allowing candidates to attempt all 160 questions. Those who clear the written cut-off are called for Document Verification and the Physical Standard Test (PST) to ensure height and chest requirements are met. The final filter is the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), requiring male candidates to complete a grueling 4.8 km run in 28 minutes, and females 2.4 km in 16 minutes. Because there is no interview, final merit is purely based on the written marks of physically qualified candidates.
