Competitive Exam Details

The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) examination is universally recognized as the "Mini IAS" and stands as the most prestigious recruitment drive for graduates seeking elite Central Government employment. SSC CGL is the exclusive gateway to securing powerful Group 'B' (Gazetted and Non-Gazetted) and Group 'C' posts across key ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India. The posts offered through this exam command immense respect, unparalleled job security, and robust Level-7 to Level-8 salary structures. Top-tier positions include Inspector of Income Tax, Inspector (Preventive Officer/Customs), Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Sub-Inspector in the CBI, and Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) in the CAG.

Following recent structural reforms, the SSC CGL examination is now a highly streamlined, two-tier process, eliminating the descriptive paper and interviews. Tier-I is a pure screening test consisting of 100 questions across four sections (Math, Reasoning, English, General Awareness) to be solved in 60 minutes. While it carries a 0.50 negative marking, Tier-I marks are strictly qualifying in nature and are not added to the final merit list. This makes Tier-II the absolute battleground.

Tier-II is a comprehensive, multi-sectional marathon conducted on a single day. Section I tests Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning/General Intelligence. Section II evaluates English Language and General Awareness. Section III is the Computer Knowledge Test, which is qualifying but features high cut-offs for top administrative posts. Immediately following the written sections, candidates must clear the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), which requires typing 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. The merit list is prepared exclusively based on the aggregate marks of Sections I and II of Tier-II. For ambitious graduates aiming for policy-level exposure, foreign postings (via MEA), or high-stakes investigative roles (CBI/Income Tax), SSC CGL is the ultimate career milestone.

Q1: What is the age limit for SSC CGL, and are final-year students eligible?
A1: The age limit varies drastically by post, generally falling between 18 to 27 years for Group C posts, and 20 to 30 years for Group B Inspector/ASO posts (with AAO going up to 30 years). Final-year students can apply, provided they acquire their graduation degree before the specific cut-off date mentioned in the notification.
Q2: Is the Computer Knowledge Module in Tier-II actually important?
A2: Yes, it is a massive trap. While it is officially "qualifying in nature," SSC mandates a significantly higher qualifying standard for top posts like ASO (CSS), MEA, and Preventive Officer. Many candidates score top marks in Math and English but lose their dream post because they failed the higher computer cut-off.
Q3: Do I need to be physically fit for SSC CGL posts?
A3: Mostly no, as these are desk jobs. However, specific uniformed executive posts like Inspector (Central Excise/Examiner/Preventive Officer), Sub-Inspector in CBI, and NIA have strict physical standards, height requirements, and medical tests (including color blindness restrictions).
Q4: Are Tier-I marks added to the final selection?
A4: No. As per the revised pattern, Tier-I is strictly a qualifying screening test. Your final rank and post allocation depend 100% on your performance in Tier-II (Section I and Section II).

Tier-I (Common Screening): General Intelligence & Reasoning (25 Qs), General Awareness (25 Qs), Quantitative Aptitude (25 Qs), English Comprehension (25 Qs).

Tier-II - Section I (Mathematical Abilities & Reasoning): Math: Number Systems, Fundamental arithmetical operations, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability. Reasoning: Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Venn Diagrams, Syllogism, Seating Arrangement, Coding-Decoding.

Tier-II - Section II (English & General Awareness): English (High Weightage - 45 Qs): Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Idioms & Phrases, Active/Passive Voice, Direct/Indirect narration, Cloze passage, Reading Comprehension. General Awareness (25 Qs): Current affairs, India and its neighboring countries, History, Culture, Geography, Economics, Polity.

Tier-II - Section III (Computer Knowledge): Computer Basics, Organization of a computer, CPU, input/output devices, Windows Explorer, Keyboard shortcuts, Internet and e-mail, Basics of networking and cyber security.
